BriefingsMishcon de Reya Recruitment Watch - July 2008
WelcomeWelcome to the July 2008 edition of Mishcon de Reya's Recruitment Watch, prepared by the Firm's Recruitment Services Group. Its aim is to provide those involved in the recruitment sector with a snapshot of what has been happening in the world of recruitment in the last month. NewsPolicy The European Commission has reached a unanimous agreement on the Temporary Agency Workers Directive following a compromise that will allow the UK to start offering temporary workers the same rights as permanent employees after 12 weeks of employment instead of from the start of employment. MarketA survey of interim chief executives and directors by Alium Partners has found that the companies they are working for are experiencing a decline in sales, a freeze on recruiting permanent employees and job cuts. The KPMG/ REC monthly employment survey for June found that the number of people being placed in permanent jobs by recruitment agencies fell at its fastest rate in over 5 years. Recruiters are worried that the new points based immigration system will impact badly on their service quality by delaying their ability to place migrant staff due to employers not applying for licences in time. Trends/Practice A survey by recruitment company Link has found that fewer Australians are seeking permanent positions in the UK's financial services sector, preferring instead to take up contract positions, because of the economic conditions. CompaniesMichael Page International has announced a slowing of its profits growth due to the tough economic conditions impacting on recruitment in the legal sector. A new online comparison site for recruitment agencies, called peoplecompare, launched in June and is free for employers to use.
